Preparing your house move with MultiAuto
In Réunion as elsewhere, moving home can be complicated to organise, especially the first time. Here is a short practical guide.

Organising your move
ESTIMATE THE VOLUME TO MOVE
First, estimate the number of boxes and the number of pieces of furniture and appliances you want to move. This lets you work out, before hiring, the size of van.
- - 3 m³ van: suitable for small goods or 20 boxes.
- - 4-6 m³ van: suitable for large appliances or many boxes.
- - 7-9 m³ panel van: to move a studio or 60 boxes.
- - 10-12 m³ large van: to move a 1-2 bedroom flat or 90 boxes.
- - 14 m³ large van: to move a 1-2 bedroom flat or 90 boxes.
- - 16-20 m³ small lorry: for a larger home or 120 boxes.
- - 20 m³ lorry with tail lift: for a larger home or 120 boxes. The tail-lift version makes handling your belongings easier.
If you are unsure about the vehicle size, contact one of our branchesand an adviser will recommend the van best suited to your move.
POINTS TO CHECK BEFORE YOUR MOVE:
Ending your lease:
Before moving, you must give notice to your landlord or letting agency. Check your tenancy agreement for the notice period and write your termination letter. Send it by recorded delivery.
Transferring your contracts:
Contact your providers to tell them about your move and give your new address.
Reading the water and electricity meters:
When you leave, you must note the readings on the various meters (water, electricity).

PREPARING FURNITURE AND BELONGINGS FOR TRANSPORT
First, make sure you have the moving materials you need (boxes, bubble wrap, tape, etc.) and sort things out: get rid of broken or damaged items, or things you no longer use.
Next, plan carefully how to move furniture that cannot be dismantled or is old. Recent furniture is often easier and more practical to dismantle, but it becomes weaker, so it is often more practical to move it in one piece. Don’t hesitate to add masking tape to the corners. Collect leaflets and magazines to wrap your crockery, or use bubble wrap.
For furniture, remember to keep all the screws and nuts in a strong bag after dismantling, so you don’t lose them during transport.
For clothes and books, we recommend packing them in less bulky bags and/or small boxes so they are easier to carry.
Make the most of the move to clean your appliances. Remember to unplug and empty your fridge a few days before. Don’t plug it back in straight away; wait until the next day.
Finally, remember to drain the waste water from your washing machine, dishwasher or tumble dryer, so you don’t damage your other belongings in the rental vehicle.
HIRING A VAN FOR YOUR MOVE
Moving alone can be a real ordeal. Ask your friends to help you move, and make sure they will be there on the day.
