In Réunion, the best outing of the southern summer comes down to one road: the one climbing to the Pas de Bellecombe, a balcony facing the Enclos Fouqué and the Dolomieu crater. Crossing the Plaine des Sables, lunar panoramas, hairpin bends: to enjoy it with peace of mind, you need the right vehicle.

The itinerary
The volcano road, step by step
From Saint-Denis or Roland Garros airport, allow about two hours’ drive. You reach the southern Highlands via the RN3 and Le Tampon, heading for Bourg-Murat (last recommended fuel stop). From there, the volcano forest road winds up to the Plaine des Sables, a striking mineral landscape, then to the car park at Pas de Bellecombe (about 2,360 m above sea level). The site sign says it: the return walk to the Dolomieu crater takes nearly 5 hours on foot, to be started only early in the morning and well equipped.

The vehicle
Why a family SUV
The climb is long, sometimes cool and misty in the Highlands. A family SUV (such as the Peugeot 3008 or Dacia Duster in our fleet) offers a high seating position, a boot for warm clothes and the comfort children appreciate on the winding sections. For a large family or a group of friends, it is the ideal compromise between space on board and ease of driving.

No counting
Unlimited mileage: drive with an easy mind
The volcano one day, the Cirque de Cilaos the next, then the beaches of the West: the distances quickly add up. At MultiAuto, unlimited mileage is included, so you set off without counting every detour. That is the whole point of hiring your car on the island from a local company.
Our tips
Preparing the trip
Set off early : the Highlands often cloud over from midday. Check the weather and whether the barrier is open before driving up. Bring warm clothes, water and closed shoes, and fill up in Bourg-Murat. Our teams at the branch will point you to the right model.
