The west coast branch
Saint-Paul, on the sunny side.
The island's second-largest town, Saint-Paul is the perfect base camp for the leeward coast: the beaches of Saint-Gilles and La Saline, Boucan Canot, and the climb up to the Maïdo to look down on Mafate. Not forgetting the Saint-Paul seafront and its famous open-air market on Friday and Saturday morning, one of the finest on Réunion.

Setting off from Saint-Paul
The branch covers the whole west: Saint-Paul, Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, La Saline, and to the north Le Port and La Possession by the coast road. Up in the hills, the Maïdo road climbs above the clouds to the viewpoint over the Cirque de Mafate. You can collect the car here and return it to another branch, the airport included.
Three routes from the branch
The drives our Saint-Paul team recommends most often, ready to go:
🗺️ The lagoon beach by beach (the half-day by the sea)
Boucan Canot, Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, l'Ermitage then La Saline: the beaches line up south of the branch over some fifteen kilometres. Mask and snorkel in the boot, parasol on l'Ermitage beach, sunset at Boucan.
🗺️ The Maïdo at daybreak (the grand morning)
About an hour's climb from the branch, and one to do early: at the Maïdo viewpoint the Cirque de Mafate opens up at 2,200 m, before the clouds come back up. Head back down through the hills above Saint-Paul and their views over the bay.
🗺️ Saint-Paul and its history (the gentle stroll)
Seafront and landing stage, the open-air market on Friday and Saturday morning, one of the finest on the island, the cave of the first French settlers, then the Tour des Roches and its pools among the cane and the coconut palms. All a few minutes from the branch.
When should you choose this branch?
Choose Saint-Paul if you are staying on the west coast, in Saint-Gilles, l'Ermitage or La Saline, or if your trip is a beach one: you collect the car a few minutes from where you are staying instead of crossing half the island from the airport. Arriving on a Sunday? Collect at Roland Garros (7 days a week) and return here, dropping off at a different branch is possible.
