A nimble size

The Cilaos road is a string of hairpin bends and narrow sections; the Salazie road winds beneath waterfalls. A city car or small SUV threads through more easily than a large vehicle.
Braking on descents
Long descents heat up the brakes. Use engine braking (change down) rather than braking continuously, and keep your distance. A manual helps with engine braking; a recent automatic handles it too.
Caution and weather
Mist rises quickly in the afternoon: set off early. Drive with care, sound your horn before blind bends, and give way on single-lane sections.
Local tip: on the Cilaos road and its 400 bends, a compact, nimble vehicle is more at ease. Choose one from our range of vehicles in Réunion.
Frequently asked questions
Is an SUV compulsory?
No. A well-driven city car gets up without any problem; an SUV mainly adds comfort and space.
Are tracks covered?
Tarmac roads, yes; unsealed tracks are not covered by the insurance.
